Plate carriers are ordinary fabric vests used in conjunction with armor plates. The vests typically contain compartments for armor plates at the front and rear that are lined with an aramid material. The ones providing protection are the armor plates.

To begin with, the plate carriers offer no ballistic protection. No law enforcement official should rely solely on wearing their carrier to ward against gunfire. Only when plate carriers contain ballistic plates are they classified as belonging to a specific level of protection. The level of protection is determined by the ballistic plates. You have the option to select the level of protection you require using plate carriers. Different ballistic plates with varying levels of protection can be used on the same plate carrier. Each plate carrier setup, however, is made particularly to be used with a certain variety of ballistic plates. Choosing the appropriate carrier rig for the appropriate ballistic plates is crucial.

Hard body armor is typically categorized as ballistic plates. In most circumstances, they’ll be level III or IV. Ceramic or polyethene (PE) material can be used to make armor plates. The best plates are made of polyethene (PE), which is the most protective and lightweight material. Although they are bulky, steel and ceramic can be employed because they are also highly protective.

Unless they contain ballistic plates, carrier plates by themselves cannot be classed under any protective level. Given these characteristics and purposes of a plate carrier setup, it is not advisable to use an empty plate carrier in a gunfight. An empty plate carrier setup is like wearing a random t-shirt. Imagine what it would appear like to see a police officer alone in the sun wearing a blue or red t-shirt. Without ballistic plates, it is never a good idea to get into a shootout; doing so is undoubtedly a death mission.
